Chapter 18
Just a month ago, when she left Silverpine, he had announced to the world that he was with Lila.
And now, less than thirty days later, he was chasing after her like a joke. How pathetic.
Jessie returned to her hotel–only to run into Charles at the entrance.
His voice was calm. “Nelson came looking for you. I told security not to let him in.”
“Thank you, Mr. Holland,” Jessie replied lightly.
Charles’s eyes darkened. “Jessie, you can just call me by my name. We were classmates, after all.”
She gave a faint smile. “Then I’ll be troubling you for the next few days, Charles.”
“It’s no trouble at all.”
Just then, Nelson’s car pulled up to the hotel.
The moment he stepped out, Charles’s demeanor shifted–guarded and unwelcoming.
Jessie glanced briefly at the man standing behind her.
“Hale and Voss, from this point on, are nothing more than plaintiff and defendant. Mr. Voss, I’ll see
you in court.”
The Hale family had made their position clear: regarding Steve’s murder case, they were pressing
for the death penalty. No lesser sentence would be accepted.
Nelson watched helplessly as Jessie walked away with Charles, both of them disappearing into the
hotel while he was stopped at the entrance.
Pain gripped his chest so tightly it felt like he couldn’t breathe.
In that moment, he understood what Jessie must have felt–standing in that bridal shop, watching
him marry Lila from above.
Now, just watching her leave with someone else was enough to rip his heart wide open.
Jessie… I’m sorry.
Two weeks later, the verdict came in. The court formally ruled on Steve’s case.
With three lives taken, he was sentenced to death. Immediate execution.

Chapter 18
Θ
Jessie read the news silently.
That same day, Nelson arranged Steve’s burial… and then showed up outside the Holland family
hotel with 999 roses, down on one knee, begging for her forgiveness.
She didn’t understand why he was doing all this.
Nor did she care what had happened between him and Lila.
Whatever love there was–it had long since faded.
She didn’t need to know the reasons.
Nelson made a scene at the hotel entrance for several days, demanding to see her.
The spectacle drew a crowd of reporters. The media had swarmed Silverpine.
There were so many people outside the hotel that Jessie and her parents couldn’t even leave to catch their flight.
Eventually, it was Charles who suggested they leave through the hotel’s rooftop helipad.
All eyes turned to Jessie.
She stood before the floor–to–ceiling window, gazing down–she could still see Nelson waiting.
After a moment of silence, she said quietly, “Okay.”
A helicopter lifted off from the rooftop, carrying them away from Silverpine.
But soon after, another helicopter rose into the sky behind them, kept chasing.
Charles’s phone began ringing nonstop–it was Nelson.
Jessie glanced over. “Pick it up.‘
Charles handed her the phone.
She answered.
On the other end, Nelson’s voice was furious.
“Charles, give Jessie back to me! Land the helicopter! I need to see her!”
Jessie spoke calmly. “Nelson.”

His voice cracked immediately.
“Jessie, please… just see me. Don’t leave me behind. I’ve already divorced Lila. It was all a lie–they
tricked me, both her and my grandfather. Jessie, just see me once.”
Tears welled in her eyes, but she smiled through them.
“Nelson, I don’t care what happened between you and Lila. I just want to say–take care of yourself,
and stop chasing me.”
“Jessie, I can’t live without you! I can explain everything!”
“Nelson,” she said softly, “the moment I stopped loving you, no explanation could ever matter
again. This is where it ends.”
“Jessie, I love you!”
His voice broke into a desperate scream.
Jessie ended the call.
The pursuing helicopter finally slowed and fell behind.
Charles looked over at her–Jessie was crying.
He wanted to hold her, to comfort her, but something stopped him.
After a moment, he spoke. “Jessie… you deserve to know what happened this past month.”
“Lila was actually Steve’s woman all along. Once Nelson found out, he divorced her and brought in
a few vagrants… to take revenge.”
Jessie wiped her tears, her voice soft. “You didn’t have to tell me.”
Charles’s tone was low. “But I didn’t want you carrying the weight of not knowing. The real reason Nelson betrayed you was because Steve told him it was Lila who’d been giving him blood all these
years.”
Jessie slowly rolled up her sleeve.
The puncture marks were long gone–but the pain never left.
Her tears fell again.

“Charles… I’ve always been terrified of pain. But I was more afraid Nelson would die. And now… I’m not afraid of anything anymore.”
How much love did it take to risk your life just to save someone?
And how much despair did it take to cut that person out of your life entirely?
This time, it was truly goodbye.
Nelson… from this moment on, between us, there are no more encounters and longing. That is the best ending we’ll ever get.
