Chapter 10
At the hospital, Nelson stared at his phone, frozen in place.
Had he really heard her say it? We’re done.
In more than twenty years together, through the worst arguments, the ugliest fights, neither of them had ever spoken those words.
He tried calling her again, but the number was no longer in service.
He remembered collapsing outside the operating room, catching a glimpse of Jessie running- without so much as a glance over her shoulder.
He remembered slipping toward death, his grandfather calling her to beg for help, and her refusal.
Worse, he remembered the cruel
Ords she’d thrown back.
The rage still burned hot in his veins.
If it hadn’t been for Lila–those quiet, secret visits every six months for the past seven years to donate a bag of blood to store in the Voss Group’s private hospital–he would have died this time for sure.
Nelson had known since childhood that something was wrong with his body.
His grandfather had told him there were several adult donors with the same rare blood type, each paid five million dollars for every donation.
When he was younger and more reckless–when he would throw himself into fights for Jessie without hesitation–he’d needed blood more often.
Later, after graduating and stepping into the business world, he learned to win with strategy instead of fists. He stopped getting hurt. He thought the donations had stopped, too.
He never imagined that the so–called “adult donors” were a lie.
That every single transfusion had come from Lila’s small, fragile body.
That she had been saving his life for twenty years.
And loving him for just as long.
He had always believed it was Jessie. After all, every time he received blood, the person lying in the

next bed was her.
And that girl would always grin at him, pale but playful.
“Nelson, I feel so weak too… you have to give me extra snacks.”
Back then, he’d wanted nothing more than to spoil Jessie for the rest of his life.
It wasn’t until six months ago–on the night his grandfather forced him to sleep with Lila–that he
accidentally injured himself and finally learned the truth.
The one who had been donating blood to him all these years… had always been Lila, not Jessie.
A nurse rushed in from the adjoining room.
“Mr. Voss, Mrs. Voss is awake.”
The words Mrs. Voss hit him like a reflex.
“Jessie, she…”
But the second the words left his mouth, he realized his mistake. Mrs. Voss wasn’t Jessie. It was
Lila.
He crossed the hall immediately.
Lila was in tears, her voice trembling.
“I’m sorry, Nelson. I’m so sorry. Let’s get divorced. I can’t have children anymore, and I caused a
rift between you and Ms. Hale. It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t stay by your side.”
Nelson pulled her into his arms, guilt and protectiveness flooding him.
“Lila, you haven’t wronged anyone. The one I misjudged… was me. Jessie’s uterus is already gone
-it’s been given to you. From now on, I’ll treat you right. You risked your life to save me, and I’ll
never forget it.”
Lila leaned into Nelson’s embrace, her voice trembling with sobs.
“Nelson, am I really allowed to stay? I thought this was the biggest dream I could never have. You…
you truly don’t love Jessie anymore?”
The mention of Jessie’s name made his chest ache.

Yes, he had mistaken his true savior for years. But the fact remained–he had doted on Jessie for twenty–seven years. That history didn’t just vanish.
Still… he couldn’t ignore how cold she’d been when he was on the brink of death. How all his years of devotion had been wasted on an ungrateful heart.
The woman he needed to love now was Lila.
If Jessie came begging for forgiveness, maybe he would let things return to how they were. But for now? He would make that ungrateful girl cry.
So he didn’t call.
Half a month passed.
No word from her.
The only news making headlines was the string of scandals hitting his closest friends.
Asher had been ousted from his board seat by his own brother. The entire Easton family had been
investigated; every one of them, including Jackson, was now behind bars.
One evening, Asher showed up at the Rosemont Estate.
“Nelson, where’s Jessie? Where is she? I haven’t been able to find her for two weeks.”
Nelson’s brows drew tight, his voice icy.
“She’s not at the villa? Then where else could she be? After what happened, she wouldn’t dare go
far.”
Asher’s voice cracked with frustration.
“She’s not there. I’ve been looking everywhere. I tried calling you, but your phone’s been off–I
only found out you were here just now.”
Across the room, Lila’s eyes flickered with something–panic.
Nelson glanced her way.
In the past two weeks, he’d barely touched his phone. Now Asher was saying he’d called repeatedly,
and none of those calls had reached him.
Nelson reached for his phone, but Lila burst into tears.

“Nelson, I… I just wanted you to rest. You’ve had so much blood transfused. I didn’t want you worrying about anything.”
His expression softened at once.
Of course. Lila had given him half of her blood… and the other half to Jessie.
She’d saved them both.
Lila had always cared about his health, and the only reason she ended Asher’s call was for his sake.
His voice dropped into that deep tone.
“Asher, just go back to the Hales‘ place and check. What exactly is going on?”
But Asher’s reply was blunt.
“Nelson, Jessie’s gone.”
Nelson scoffed inwardly. Impossible.
Jessie had clung to him her whole life–he knew her too well.
She was profoundly timid. Even if he had hurt her, twenty–seven years together meant she’d sulk, maybe cry… but she would never disappear.
The veins in his forehead stood out, his eyes going cold.
“No. There’s no way. Jessie would never leave me.”
