Chapter 2
Three hours later, Jessie returned to the home she shared with Nelson.
Nelson’s cold, piercing gaze fixed on her the moment she stepped through the door.
“Jessie, where were you? I called and couldn’t reach you. I’ve been waiting for two hours do you
have any idea how worried I was?”
Jessie looked at him again, but all she could see was the image from the airport–Nelson’s arm around Lila, his head bent, kissing her hungrily.
Once upon a time, she had loved the way Nelson kissed her.
Now it made her stomach turn.
When she didn’t answer, Nelson got up and closed the distance between them.
“Jessie, you know I hate it when you disappear without telling me where you’re going. Do I need to
remind you what happened the last time you pulled something like that?”
A second later, his hand was clamped firmly around her waist.
Jessie’s body went rigid, unmoving, her lashes quivering.
She used to find the faint scent of tobacco on him intoxicating–safe.
Now it felt dangerous.
She knew his brand of dominance. She knew his possessiveness.
When she was twenty, they’d had a fight. She’d gone hiking with classmates just to get away from
him. Nelson had gone insane, chartering helicopters to search every mountain trail until he found
her.
And when he did, the first thing he did wasn’t comfort her–it was lock her in his penthouse and
keep her there for an entire month, taking what he wanted whenever he wanted.
Her tears hadn’t stopped him. Nothing had–until she’d begged and sworn over and over that she’d never disappear on him again.
From that moment on, Jessie had been careful never to push him that far.
Now his long fingers tilted her chin up.

It’s been a while, but I’m finding my faith
“Jessie, talk to me. Or do you want me to punish you again?”
Panic flickered in her eyes. If he found out she was planning to leave him for good, she knew he’d
lose his mind.
She couldn’t risk it.
Her voice trembled. “I… I just went to the hospital.”
She was pregnant–two months along.
The word “hospital” made his expression darken instantly. He pressed a kiss to her forehead, his
voice dropping low.
“Jessie, I know you still want to give me a child, but you can’t. We’ve tried for years. That’s enough. I just want you. My life won’t be missing anything without children. Stop going to the hospital. I don’t want you in pain anymore.
))
She had gone through nearly twenty rounds of IVF treatments and never once conceived. Dozens of
hormone injections had left her arms bruised and swollen–yet nothing had worked.
Moments later, Nelson’s phone rang.
Jessie watched his dark brows crease before he reached out and ruffled her hair.
“Baby, forget about the baby thing, alright? You’re all I need. We can choose to live child–free.
You’re my treasure. I have to step out for a bit–don’t go anywhere. Don’t make me worry, or I’ll be truly angry.”
He didn’t wait for her to answer before leaving–almost too quickly.
Jessie gave a bitter smile. Someone was waiting for him.
So he’d only come home to check if she was here.
Half an hour later, her phone buzzed with a voice recording from an unknown number.
“Nelson, is it true? Lila’s pregnant?”
“Yeah. Three months. Jessie can’t have kids, but my family needs an heir. My grandfather’s been pushing me hard.”
The man’s voice sounded like one of Nelson’s friends. “So that’s why you drugged Jessie to make her sterile? And why you never legally married her? Wasn’t she the one you claimed to love most?”

Jessie froze, her blood running cold.
What? Sterile?
Nelson hadn’t just cheated on her, but killed her dreams of being a mother.
Her chest ached so sharply she could barely breathe as her mind flashed back to their wedding
night.
Nelson had brought her a bowl of warm herbal tonic.
“Jessie, my elders swear this is a fertility tonic. Drink it tonight and you’ll get pregnant on the first try. No crying later if it works.”
She had been shy, curled in his arms, while he fed her spoon after spoon until the bowl was empty.
From the very beginning… he had never intended for her to have a child.
The recording continued.
“Of course I love Jessie. Why else would I let Lila get pregnant? Why else would I set aside years of bad blood between our families just to be with Jessie?
My parents died in that car crash because of Jessie’s parents. I’ve spent years trying to bury that
fact–pampering and protecting her.
I couldn’t give her marriage or children, but I gave her everything I could. Even the Voss Group.”
“And Lila? Is she really just the woman your grandfather picked to carry your child?”
Nelson was silent for a long moment before finally speaking.
“Lila’s calm. Being with her is easy. She brings me peace… and that’s something Jessie could never
give me.”
The voice on the other end let out a low laugh.
“So you want both, huh? The one who feels like home–and the one who burns like fire.”
