Chapter 21
As the golden sunrise turned to a dimmer yellow, it signaled the start of another night of excitement.
At the famous Ashenford Dam, preparations were underway for a private rally race
Dressed in her racing suit, Veronica stood under the setting sun, holding her helmet. She gazed at the reservoir below, soaking in the warmth of the setting sun, her eyes closed as she savored each breath of fresh air.
Isabel said, “Ronie, they won’t stand a chance against you.”
Veronica smiled, “I think so too.”
Today’s race was a lap around the reservoir. The course wasn’t long, but since it was held at night, it added quite a bit of difficulty. Of course, for those who loved rally racing, this was just the kind of thrill and challenge they craved.
There were only three teams in the race today, each with two cars and two drivers. There were no solo racers, and no data would be reported
The outcome of this race would decide who would own a new casino in Vellas. Veronica had been invited by the Gorman family, and the other two families had also invited well–known drivers.
“Ronie, it’s almost time. Are you going to check the car? Isabel asked.
Veronica nodded. Just as she was about to turn, she heard avoice she hadn’t heard in a while.
“Well, well, if it isn’t Veronica. I thought you disappeared after getting that championship two years ago. What are you doing back out here today? Running out of money already?” Jayla Clark’s sarcastic voice cut through the air.
Veronica looked up and saw Jayla, also dressed in a racing suit, walking toward her. Veronica similed, “I heard a defeated opponent of mine came looking for trouble. I guess I have to grant her wish
As soon as Jayla heard that, her face fell. She showed her hat into the arms of one of her companions and stormed right up to Veronica. “Veronica, what’s with the arrogance? You know deep down how little merit your championship really had, right?
“If you hadn’t tricked Lucas Warren back then, how could you have won? Now you get to live such a comfortable life, while he has to spend his life in a wheelchair. And it’s all because of you.”
Jayla got right up in Veronica’s face, shouting loudly.
Veronica snorted, barely blinking. Her voice was icy. “So you think that can cover up the fact that you lost to me, you loser?”
Jayla was instantly enraged. Veronica ignored her and walked toward her car.
Back then, Veronica, Jayla, and Lucas had been part of the same racing team. In their younger, carefree days, they had been close friends.
However, things had changed later, leading to Lucas suffering severe injuries and a high–level amputation. As a result, Veronica had become like a stranger to Jayla and Lucas.
Thinking about the past, Veronica scoffed and lowered her gaze to check the car’s dashboard.
Jayla suddenly lunged at the windshield, her hands pressed against the glass as she glared at Veronica, her eyes wide with anger.
“Veronica, you ungrateful bitch. Don’t forget that Lucas is going to be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life all because of you. How can you still race without a single ounce of guilt?” Jayla yelled.
Veronica furrowed her brows. She wasn’t about to let Jayla’s words get to her.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” Isabel snapped. She called someone to pull Jayla away.
Before Isabel could say much more, the opposing team from the Gorman family rushed over to protect Jayla, saying, “Ms. Gorman, attacking a competitor before the race is against the rules, Are you trying to hand over the management rights to us?”
Isabel bellowed, “Are you blind? She threatened my friend-
“Bella. Veronica rolled down the window and leaned out, her expression calm. “Don’t mind her.”

She thought, The best way to deal with someone like Jayla is to defeat her.”
From a distant viewing platform, Damian Quinn lowered his binoculars and teased Raymond. “Raymond, you’re not seriously interested in that girl, are you?”
