Chapter 13
Chapter 13
Veronica stood at the bus stop replying to messages on her outdated keypad phone when a Lincoln limousine stopped in front of her. Hearing the sound of several people getting out, she shifted aside without lifting her head.
“Ms. Weston?” A strange female voice came from beside her. Veronica looked up at the young woman she didn’t recognize.
The woman looked to be around thirty, with delicate makeup and a well–tailored outfit. Even her smile seemed measured to perfection
When Veronica gave a slight nod, Alicia Mooney’s smile deepened. “Hello, Ms. Weston. My name is Alicia Mooney. From this moment on. Ill be your personal assistant.”
As Veronica looked at her with confusion, Alicia continued, “This is Ivan Levine, and this is lan Pierre. They’re responsible for your safety. And this is your driver, Scott Hooper.” She pointed to the men standing firmly to the side as she spoke.
Veronica seemed even more puzzled. She had given Leonard strict orders not to reveal her identity, so these people couldn’t have beery arranged by him. She thought, Could it be Uncle Colton?
Alicia saw through Veronica’s confusion and handed her a brand–new phone with a smile.
Veronica hesitantly lifted it to her ear, and a deep, unfamiliar male voice came through. “I’ll be in Oakrella for the next few days handling a project. You’ll stay put here. The people assigned to you will be on duty twenty–four hours a day.”
Veronica blinked. That voice didn’t sound like Colton Who are you?” she
questioned
Raymond was signing documents while speaking on the phone. Her words made his hand pause, and the pen in his grip drew a stray line down the page.
For a moment, there was only silence. Then his lowered voice came through the receiver. “Raymond Harrington.”
“Raymond Harrington?” Veronica repeated.
Of course she had heard the name. Back in the village, when she had nothing to do, she had invested a little in funds and finance.
During that time, she had often heard people talk about a financial genius named Raymond. But she didn’t understand what that had to do with her.
“Do we know each other?” Veronica asked. If it had been any ordinary girl facing such a scene and then learning his identity, she would have been overjoyed. But instead of excitement, Veronica’s reaction was strikingly calm
Alicia, who had been observing her new boss closely, noticed that Veronica’s expression was genuine. Veronica didn’t seem thrilled at all.
Alicia nodded to herself and thought, ‘She’s impressive!
On the other end of the line, Raymond was momentarily at a loss for words. He set down his pen, pinched his forehead, and forced out a few words through clenched teeth. “I said I’d devote myself to you.”
Veronica froze. A cold, detached face flashed in her mind as well as her own offhand joke. She thought, “So this guy actually took my words seriously?”
Raymond spoke, “Alright. I’m going into a meeting now. If you need anything, go to Alicia. And if someone gives you trouble, don’t just stand there and take it. Do whatever you think is right. I’ve got you covered.
With that, he hung up before Veronica could even respond. Rendered speechless, she couldn’t believe what had just happened.
Even after she’d slipped into a gown and had her makeup done, Veronica still hadn’t come to her senses. When she looked in the mirror, the girl staring back at her, with rosy cheeks and flawless skin, hardly even felt like her at all.
She thought, All I did was meddle a litle and save some random guy. How did 1 end up being clung to like this! And by Raymond, the famous young prodigy? How could this be? This feels like a scam.
Alicia, with her flawless social skills, was already standing to the side, watching Veronica with that perfect smile as she laid on the flattery. “Ms. Weston, you’ll definitely be the most gorgeous girl at the party tonight. Can I send your picture to Mr. Harrington?”
She had already snapped two shots before finishing her sentence.
Veronica didn’t know what to say. She thought, ‘So why even bother asking me first?”
