Chapter 2
“Tiffany, you’re my personal secretary. How could you start a physical fight with someone on the street like this?”
Maxwell Grayson, surrounded by bodyguards, strode quickly toward me.
“So you’re Riley Reynolds?”
I carefully studied the man standing before me. I had to admit, my father had good taste.
Six–foot–one, dressed in a tailored suit, he was handsome without sacrificing dignity.
If I had to find any flaw, it would be the coldness in his eyes as he looked at me.
“Mr. Grayson, since this is our first meeting, allow me to briefly introduce myself.”
“My name is Riley Reynolds, and I’m from-”
“No need!”
Maxwell cut me off with an impatient wave of his hand before I could finish.
“We’ve met now, and we’re clearly incompatible. Go back wherever you came from.”
For a moment, I thought I’d misheard him.
I’d driven to New York for over ten hours straight, hadn’t even had a chance to drink water.
And the second we meet, without any conversation, he tells me to leave??
Was he playing me for a fool?
My temper flared instantly.
“So you’re Maxwell Grayson, the future son–in–law my father picked out?”
“Dismissing me before I can even finish speaking seems rather rude, don’t you think?”
My words transformed his expression immediately.
“Rude?”
“Miss Reynolds, why don’t you turn around and look at that building behind you? Do you honestly think you’re in my league?”
He looked me from head to toe with disdain.
“I have no idea what my father was thinking, wanting me to marry a trophy wife like you.”
His comment sent the crowd into another frenzy.
“What? This woman is Mr. Grayson’s fiancée? That’s absolutely insane!”
“A country bumpkin like her trying to marry way above her station–she should take a good look in the mirror and see if she’s worthy.”
“Mr. Grayson is the most eligible bachelor in New York! I’m the first to object to this engagement!”
As the comments grew louder, I felt increasingly bewildered.

Chapter 2
How did we jump from strangers to fiancée? When did I ever say I wanted to marry him?
Even if I did, such a decision would require approval from my superiors!
“Fine, fine. I’m a trophy wife, and you’re the big shot. Happy now?”
“Since Mr. Grayson isn’t interested in me, would you mind returning the gift my mother sent you for our preliminary discussions?”
“My mom specifically told me that if the marriage falls through, I should get the money back.”
In reality, my mother had never mentioned this–I just couldn’t stand his attitude.
As soon as I finished speaking, Secretary Warner jumped in.
“Who the hell do you think you’re talking down to, bitch?”
“Mr. Grayson is the youngest billionaire in New York’s history. You think he needs your pocket change?”
Witnessing this display, I finally understood the true meaning of “bootlicker.”
“Secretary Warner, I’m simply asking for my own property back. What does his wealth have to do with anything?”
Maxwell’s face turned crimson after hearing my response.
“It’s just $80,000, fine, I’ll return it.”
He pulled out his phone and initiated a transfer on the spot.
“I’ll give you $100,000. Consider the extra $20K a parting gift from me for your trip home.”
I curved my lips into a slight smile.
“Well, thank you so much, Mr. Grayson.”
Just as I turned to leave, Tiffany suddenly shouted after me.
“Hold it right there, you bitch!”
I paused mid–step and slowly turned around.
“What now? Is Secretary Warner inviting me to dinner?”
Tiffany gave me a sinister smile before leaning in to whisper something in Maxwell’s ear.
The next second, he instantly exploded with rage.
“Riley Reynolds! You dared to crash into
my
car?!”
