Chapter 2
That night, Willow’s Instagram blew up.
[Who’s the lucky grad student who landed such an amazing boss right out of school!]
The photos showed a five–star Michelin restaurant, the latest iPhone, and a Venmo transfer screenshot for $100,000.
The last picture was Garrett cutting meat and feeding it to Willow.
I scrolled through those three photos over and over again.
The more I looked, the more our ten years together felt like a complete joke.
in all that time, he’d never bought me a single gift, never sent me a penny.
‘Everything I have will be yours eventually–transferring money back and forth is pointless right
10W.”
But now? He was dropping $100,000 without blinking.
When we went out to eat, he’d sit there like a king waiting for me to handle everything before he’d
ven touch his food.
very time I wanted to take a photo, he’d refuse without exception.
ut now Willow was getting everything I’d ever wanted.
Vithout even trying.
My vision blurred as tears started falling despite my efforts to hold them back.
ing–dong–the doorbell rang.
opened the door to find a delivery guy: “Hi there, I’m here to deliver your wedding photos.”
I never had any wedding photos taken.”
That can’t be right–this is Garrett Montgomery’s place, isn’t it?”

I nodded, and the delivery guy insisted he had the right address.
He brought in several large packages.
After he left, my hands were shaking as I opened the boxes-
In the wedding photos were Garrett and Willow.
Eight outfits, eight different scenes–Garrett’s smile blindingly bright in every fucking shot.
By then, someone opened the door. I looked up to see Garrett standing in the doorway with Willow
in his arms.
“Give me a hand, she’s wasted.”
Ordering me around had become such a habit for Garrett that he’d apparently forgotten about our
blowout at the office.
But I didn’t move, just pointing to the boxes.
“You’ve got five minutes to clean up these garbage.”
“Including her.”
I pointed at Willow, who was leaning against Garrett with her face flushed red from drinking.
“No need to be such a bitch about it.”
“These wedding photos were for Willow’s mom–she wanted to see her daughter get married before
she died.”
“It’s just to make an dying person happy. Why are you being so petty?”
Willow nodded with red–rimmed eyes. “I just wanted to make my mother’s final days happier… But sadly, she passed away before she could see it happen.”
As she said this, she began to sob, her words becoming fragmented and incoherent.
“I put down my home… address, I don’t know… I don’t know how it got sent to Mr. Montgomery’s place.”
“Don’t be mad… at him, this isn’t his fault…”

Willow’s voice was all weepy and pathetic, making me look like some unreasonable bitch picking
fights.
“An Ivy League grad who can’t even get her own address right?”
“What’s in your head, water?”
“Fine, since you two can’t bear to throw this shit away, I’ll do it myself.”
I turned around, grabbed scissors, and started shredding the wedding posters and photo albums.
I picked up picture frames and displays, smashing and breaking them, then cutting up each photo
with the scissors.
“Please stop!”
“Aria, I can take these with me!”
Willow tried to stop me with her bare hands, and my scissors accidentally sliced across her palm.
“АНН!!”
A piercing scream cut through the air, snapping Garrett out of his drunken haze.
Garrett furiously shoved me aside, and I lost my balance, falling backward onto the broken glass shards that cut into my palm.
“Aria, what the hell is wrong with you!”
‘Always throwing tantrums, breaking shit, hurting people–do you have any idea how to act like a
decent human being!”
‘Willow just lost her mother, and you lost yours too–can’t you show some goddamn empathy!”
That one sentence pierced straight through my heart.
He struck right at my vulnerability.
My mother’s death was my greatest regret.
Garrett and I were studying abroad when she passed, and with all the travel restrictions, we couldn’t
make it back for her funeral.

I had to say goodbye to my mom through a screen.
Even now, I still wake up crying from nightmares.
Garrett knew all of this, yet here he was throwing it in my face to defend Willow.
Without looking back, Garrett carried Willow out.
stared at the wound on my palm, bitterness slowly filling my chest.
Mom, the man you picked turned out to be trash.”
I don’t want him anymore.”
The silent living room offered no response.
