Jaelynn ignored him and picked a spot by the door, away from him, where the air felt fresher.
Noticing Jaelynn and Javon acting like strangers, Logan tried to smooth things over. “Javon, Jaelynn’s been handling the wedding preparations all by herself. It’s not easy. How can you argue over something so small after being together for more than ten years?”

Right then, Javon’s phone rang.
“Shay, you’re still running a fever. Listen to the doctor and rest. Don’t wander off. I’m coming over now.‘
Javon grabbed his suit jacket and stood. “I’ve got to go. Next time, the drinks are on me.”
As he passed Jaelynn, he caught her looking down.

Talon cleared his throat. “Jaelynn, don’t be so petty. Shayla’s a student Javon sponsors. Of course he’s going to care. Men have their social obligations. They might go along with things, but as long as they come back when it matters, it’s fine.”
Jaelynn just smiled.
After the birthday party, she went back to working on the venue documents.
Her phone buzzed.
It was a message from “Zain.” She paused for a moment.
“Ms. Norton, sorry, I’ve been busy with work lately. Are you free this Friday evening? I’d like to take you out to dinner.”
She decided to take this blind date seriously.
Jaelynn typed her reply, head bowed.
“I’m free Friday evening. Let me know once you’ve picked a restaurant.”
“Okay.”
Meanwhile, Javon woke up in the middle of the night with a stomachache.
He suddenly remembered the oatmeal Jaelynn used to make for him.
He went downstairs to the kitchen and checked, but there was none.
Frowning and holding his stomach, he sent her a WhatsApp message. “Which brand of oats did you usually buy for me?”

Javon immediately set the envelope down and spoke gently as he walked out.
“I’ll be there soon. Don’t worry, I won’t let you go hungry.”
He had no idea this letter was the bridal shop’s final notice to destroy the wedding dress.

The 10 a.m. meeting was suddenly delayed by half an hour.
Javon sat behind his desk, expression stern. “Shayla, didn’t you check the documents you brought for my signature? How could you miss something so important?”
Shayla was too embarrassed to look up.

Hearing her shaky voice, Javon’s frown softened.
“I’m not scolding you. Mistakes happen, especially when you’re new. But you need to take responsibility for your work. You’re here to lighten my load, not add to it.”
Soon after, Marcus arrived to take over Shayla’s tasks.
He was fully capable and didn’t need her help.
Left on the sidelines, Shayla could only leave the office with red, tear–streaked eyes.

Jaelynn had been called into the meeting at the last minute.
She took a seat at the far end of the table.
