Chapter 3
“Uncle Reid, I want to call off the engagement.” Frost Harper stood in the living room, her voice firm.[]
Mr. Reid paused in surprise: “Why so suddenly… Isn’t the wedding about to happen?“[]
She lowered her gaze, hiding the bitterness in her eyes: “Callan and I aren’t right for each other. Better not to waste each other’s time. My mother’s release is coming up–I want to take her away, spend time with her properly.“]]
Seeing her resolve, Mr. Reid could only agree: “Alright then. I’ll arrange tickets and everything. After your mother’s released in two weeks, you can leave…“[]
Just then, Callan Reid’s voice came from behind: “Who’s leaving?“]]
Frost stiffened, speaking before Mr. Reid could: “Nobody. Why are you back?“[]
Callan didn’t press further: “Heard you came home. Came to get you.“[]
Later, Mr. Reid asked them to stay for dinner.[]
At the table, Callan habitually served her food–things like this, picking her up, serving her meals, he never got wrong. That’s why she’d mistaken it for genuine affection.[]
Halfway through dinner, Callan brought up the wedding: “Dad, the wedding proceeds as planned in two weeks. Remember to notify the guests.“]
Mr. Reid paused, glancing between them: “Didn’t Frost tell you? About calling off the engagement?”
His words were drowned by a phone ringing. Callan answered, and sitting beside him, Frost easily heard everything.[]
“Dr. Reid, Rayna has a fever but won’t leave work. Come convince her!“]]
He gripped the phone, voice urgent: “Watch her. I’ll be right there.“[]
Hanging up, he asked Mr. Reid: “Dad, what were you saying?“]
Before Mr. Reid could answer: “Tell me later. I have an emergency. Gotta go.“]
He abandoned his usual manners, chair scraping harshly as he stood and strode toward the door.[]
Watching his retreating figure, her heart felt crushed by an invisible fist, pain throbbing dully.[]
After leaving the Reid estate, Frost went to the prison.
She held the phone, looking through glass at her mother’s haggard face, throat burning as she held back tears.
Her mother’s eyes shone with excitement, pressing the phone close: “Frost, all these years–have the Reids, has Callan treated you well?“]
She tugged her sleeve over her wounds, smiling: “So well, Mom. Don’t worry.“[]
Her mother relaxed: “Your wedding’s coming up, isn’t it? Such a pity I can’t attend.“[]

“We’re not getting married. He doesn’t love me.” Frost kept her expression light: “Mom, when you’re released, let’s leave here, okay? I’ll stay by your side forever. Just the two of us.“]
Her mother’s heart ached seeing her like this, eyes filling with tears: “Yes, whatever you want. Whatever you want.”

Returning to the empty house–she hadn’t been home for a month and a half–familiar scenes felt like another lifetime.]
She went upstairs, packing her belongings. Everything from Callan and the Reid family stayed behind. Those things were never hers to begin with.[]
That night Callan didn’t come home. He returned the next afternoon.[]
He brought a stylist and makeup artist: “There’s a medical gala tonight. I’ll introduce you around.“[]
Callan never hesitated to acknowledge her as the Reid family’s daughter–in–law in public–because he saw her as duty. Only duty.
After getting ready, Frost reached for the passenger door handle, but it wouldn’t open.
From the driver’s seat, Callan spoke: “We’re picking up Rayna. She gets carsick–sit in back.“]

Frost’s grip tightened on the handle. Had he forgotten she got carsick too?
She smiled bitterly to herself, wordlessly moving to the back door.[]

After picking up Rayna Mills, her first words upon entering: “Thank you for staying with me all night yesterday, Doctor. My fever broke so quickly because of you.“]
Callan’s eyes crinkled with indulgent affection as he ruffled her hair: “Good that you’re better. Such a weak constitution–be more careful.“]
The scene stabbed at Frost’s eyes. Then Rayna acted surprised, as if just noticing her: “Miss Harper’s here too? I shouldn’t sit here–let me take the back.”
Callan started the car: No, stay put.“[]
Frost’s carsickness was severe. Halfway there, she was swallowing back acid. Fortunately, they reached the venue before she completely succumbed.
She entered on Callan’s arm, Rayna close beside him.
Throughout the medical gala, he indeed introduced her to many people–briefly, before focusing on presenting Rayna Mills to the medical bigwigs. Frost became the afterthought.[]
Her carsickness lingered. Not wanting to stay longer, she told Callan she was going to the restroom.]
She stayed outside thirty minutes before taking a deep breath and heading back.[]
But reaching the entrance, she saw Callan carrying a flushed, breathless Rayna Mills upstairs, her face crimson and breathing labored.]
His voice was rough, as if restraining himself: “Rayna, hold on. Almost there.“]]

room together.
