Chapter

This was the thirtythird time Frost Harper and Callan Reid’s wedding had been postponed

This time, a car had hit her the night before the ceremony.

Nineteen broken bones. Three trips to the ICU. She’d barely survived.[

When she could finally walk, she leaned against the corridor wall for support. At the corner, she heard her fiancé talking with a friend

Last time drowning, this time a car accident. Two more months delayed. What’s your next method?]

Frost’s blood turned to ice.]

Callan, in his white coat, played with his phone casually. No more postponements.

His friend looked surprised. So you’re giving up? Marrying Frost Harper? What about your intern, Rayna Mills?]

When Frost was sent to the Reid family, Father told me to care for herthat we’d marry someday. I’ve treated her like a wife since childhood. It became habit, until I met Rayna. His eyes brightened. [

She’s from nothing, but she never gives up. Strong. I noticed her immediately.

Then pursue her.

Silence stretched before Callan answered: Frost’s mother saved our family. She’s my duty. Those thirtythree times were my struggle. Now I accept responsibility. As for Raynawatching from afar is enough.[]

Each word stabbed through Frost’s heart. She gripped the wall to stay upright.[

Something wet touched her face. Tears.

Frost didn’t listen any further. She stumbled back to her room, tears silently streaming down her face.

She never could have imagined that all thirtythree accidents had been orchestrated by Callan Reid himself

The first timecaught in a brawl, stabbed by accident.

The secondbitten by a snake in their garden, nearly died from the poison.[

The thirdCallan took her mountain climbing, she fell, spent two weeks in the ICU.

All because he didn’t want to marry her.

Their engagement had been arranged when she was ten, when the Reid family faced investigation and prison. Her mother, their accountant, took full blame to save them.

So Old Master Reid brought her home, arranged her engagement to Callan, gave her security.[

The Reids had always been kind to her, Callan included. They supported everything she did, even her bandsomething high society scorned.

She’d believed they were truly in love. But it was all duty. His heart belonged elsewhere.[

The dull ache in her chest sharpened into a blade, stirring every wound.[

Ten minutes later, Callan entered to clean her wounds. Seeing her reddened eyes, he paused. What’s wrong? Are you in pain again?”

Looking at his concerned expression, all she heard was that wordduty. It pierced her heart.[

Her pain sensitivity was higher than normal, so even wound cleaning required anesthesia.[

Callan picked up the anesthetic, then his phone rang. He set it down, answered.[

She noticed the cartoon charm dangling from his phone. A memory surfaced.

Her band’s first competition winthe prize was a charm. She’d given it to him joyfully, but he’d tossed it deep in a drawer.[

Too childish,he’d said, frowning

Now his phone bore the same cartoon charm as Rayna Mills. It swayed, making her eyes ache.[

The caller’s voice filled the quiet room. Rayna: Dr. Reid, I have a patient I’m unsure about. Could you come take a look?

Frost felt Callan’s entire demeanor brighten.[

Yes, I’ll be right there. His voice turned light.

She’d once thought this was just mentoring. Now she saw the truthevery sign had been there.]]

Callan hung up, reached past the anesthetic, grabbed the cleaning tools directly.[

Searing pain shot through her body. She groaned, dizzy, cold sweat pouring down.]

Her voice trembled: Callan, you forgot the anesthetic

He didn’t stop, distracted: Better this way. Anesthetic interferes with healing. Just bear with it.[

Frost’s body convulsed with pain, hands gripping the sheets so hard they nearly tore.[

Her voice turned pleading: Callan, please use anesthetic. I’m in agony.[

Be good, almost done.He worked faster.

Minutes later, he finished, tossing instruments onto the tray carelessly.[

Frost lay collapsed on the bed. Through her tilted vision, she watched his eager departure.[

Chapter

Anesthetic didn’t interfere with healing at all. He’d done this to rush to Rayna Mills, unwilling to wait even five minutes for medication to take effect.

Her heart felt shredded. Tears slid down her cheeks onto white sheets.[

The brutal pain continued torturing her until darkness claimed her consciousness
