Doctors at the hospital found nothing wrong with Eleanor. []
Yet she clung to Seth, sobbing, a picture of fragile distress.[]
“Seth, my chest hurts… so tight.” Her voice was a breathy whine. She pressed closer, her lips brushing his neck. “And my legs… they just won’t hold me.“]

“Daddy, Aunt Eleanor’s scared!” Connor piped up, playing his part perfectly. “You’re the strong man! Protect her!“]
“Yeah! Don’t cry, Aunt Eleanor!” Chloe chirped, hugging Eleanor’s leg. “Sweetie protects you too!“]
Seeing the twins‘ concern, Seth’s resistance softened.
Eleanor had endured Fiona’s alleged attacks since returning.
He scooped Eleanor up, carrying her back to the French château he’d gifted her.[]
As he tried to set her down on the plush sofa, her arms tightened around his neck.[]
“Seth, don’t let go… I’m terrified. Hold me tighter. Kiss me… Maybe your love… it will make the pain stop…” []
Her eyes swam with manufactured tears, her plea drenched in cloying sweetness.[]
This time, Seth gently but firmly pried her hands away. “Eleanor,” his voice was calm, resolute, “I told you. Anything you need. Except this. We are friends.“[]
“Friends?” Eleanor’s mask slipped, revealing raw frustration. “But at the club… we crossed that line! I’m suffering now! Can’t you just… comfort me?”
“Please, Seth… love me again? I’ve always loved you!”[]
Seth didn’t respond to the outburst. Instead, his gaze turned assessing, sharp.
“Speaking of that night…” he began, his voice dangerously quiet. “Were you really drugged?“[]
“Or…was someone else the target?“]
His self–control was legendary. After losing Eleanor, shattered, he’d found Fiona. []
