I had finally made up my mind.

Gaspy had almost fully recovered from his surgery, and I decided to take him back to Canada.
We would go back to the home my sister and I had decorated together, filled with our best memories.
At first, I told myself I was staying with Jeremy because of Gaspard’s illness.
However, deep down, I knew that was just an excuse to remain by his side.
Now, it was time to say goodbye.
Nicolas’s dark eyes softened as he looked at me.
“Bon voyage,” he said gently.
“If you ever need help, you can always reach out.”
In his hands was a bouquet of blooming lilies of the valley.
The flowers had a meaning.
“Before happiness comes, I’ll wait patiently for you to return.”
The boarding announcement echoed through the airport.
I hesitated, then, just before heading through security, shared a secret with Nicolas.

“Nick, I know you were the one who gave me that vinyl record.”
Back in my senior year, I had searched everywhere for a certain record but couldn’t find it.
On my birthday, I had been feeling disappointed–until I opened my locker the next day and found it there.
There was also a little note attached.
It said, “Are you happy now?”
As I turned to leave, a lump formed in my throat, and a quiet ache spread in my chest.
“Nicolas, I understand your feelings.
“However, I was never able to return them,” I muttered to myself.
The plane began to taxi, and I gazed quietly out the window.
“Mom, you’re crying.”
Gaspard, my little sharp–eyed boy, saw straight through my act.
I forced a smile and made up the lamest excuse.
“No, I just got a bit of sand in my eyes.”
By now, Jeremy should have received my wedding gift.
It was the check his mother once forced on me.
All these years, no matter how hard life got, I never touched it.
Maybe that was my last bit of pride.
My love for him had been pure from start to finish, but now, I had nothing

left to give.
“Jeremy, I cannot bring myself to love you anymore.
“Please, let me go too.”
Months later, I was settled in Canada, running a little flower shop in a quiet town.
It did not make much, but it was peaceful.
Rumors drifted over from New York–that the Moreau family’s heir had lost his mind, running away from his own wedding.
Nicolas told me Jeremy had been searching for me everywhere, even showing up at his place to cause trouble.
Later, he had locked himself in our old room, drinking nonstop.
Before I left, I had cut off all my contacts in the States, leaving only an old email account.
My heart pounded as I logged in.
There it was an email.
“Eli, I was wrong.
“Do you still want me?”
Tears blurred my vision.
My fingers instinctively reached for the necklace at my collarbone- Jeremy’s old engagement ring.
I hesitated for a long moment before finally pulling it off and throwing it
away.

“But not anymore.”
The end.
