Chapter 11
Before he could finish, my hand came down across his face with a sharp
crack.
Each word I spoke felt like fire searing through my eyes.
“Jeremy, I don’t need your forgiveness.
“Because I have never wronged you.”
He would never know that back when he was in Germany for treatment, I secretly flew over to see him more than once.
At the time, my sister didn’t understand.
“Eli, why are you doing this?
“Just tell him the truth.”
However, all I could think about was fixing his leg.
Jeremy was so young and full of life–how could I bear to see him confined to a wheelchair forever?
Then, fate struck. My sister died in childbirth, leaving Gaspard in my
arms.
When I was at rock bottom, Jeremy appeared again.
In the beginning, I carried a faint sense of hope deep inside.
I even foolishly believed it was destiny that brought us together again.
Even when he, clueless about the truth, surrounded himself with other

women, pushing my patience to its limits…
Even when he, caught in his misunderstanding, spoke cruelly to me and Gaspard…
I still gritted my teeth and bore it in silence.
I told myself that once I explained everything–that I had left only because of his parents‘ pressure–he would forgive me.

In Tribeca Villas, during countless long nights, I would lie awake and hear the muffled sounds through the wall.
The moans, the low whispers of “baby,” and the creaking bed that never seemed to stop.
One night, I could not take it anymore.
I stood at his door, eyes red.
“Jeremy, do you still love me?”
He looked at me, his neck marked with fresh, dark hickeys, his eyes cold as steel.
Are you worthy?”
Then he laughed, his gaze dripping with contempt.
“Eloise, you’re just a dog I keep.”

When I agreed to marry him years ago, I thought my love for him would withstand time.
Too bad, love is fragile.
Tears, lies, and despair had tainted the purity of what I once felt.
I thought to myself, “Jeremy, I think I have to break my promise.
“I can’t hold on any longer.”
Gaspard’s surgery went well.
The doctor said that with proper care, he would soon be running and jumping like any other child.
By coincidence, our flight was booked for the same day Jeremy got married.
At the airport, the large screen played the live broadcast–Jeremy and his bride walking hand in hand, smiling under the blessings and envy of the crowd.
A group of young girls nearby sighed.
“What a perfect match.”
“A true match made in heaven.”
I watched without expression, my mind somewhere far away.
“Eli, have you really thought this through?”
Nicolas’s voice pulled me back.

I turned to him with a faint, grateful smile and nodded.
“Yeah. Thank you for everything, Nick.”
