Adrian’s heart ached for her, desperate to shower her with affection.
“You earned your award with your own talent. If anyone should leave, it’s not you!”
Then he turned on me coldly.”
“Sophia, look what you’ve done. Do you want to drive her to her death before you’re satisfied?”
“Can’t you learn to be more understanding like she is?”
“All you ever do is make trouble!
I stared at their display of affection, my heart utterly still
I even had the mind to comment:
“If your acting in movies were this convincing, then I’d admit you deserved the award. But right now, you’re overacting.” Adrian frowned.l
“Sophia, when did you become so bitter? Chloe just graduated–she’s innocent and straightforward. Unlike you, scheming and petty
Through tears, Chloe gave him a grateful smile.
“Mr. Carter, I’m really not as good as you say.”
Then she lowered her head humbly.
I’m just a small–town girl from a humble background. I don’t deserve to wear jewelry worth hundreds of thousands. I don’t deserve such an award either.”
Adrian squeezed her hand tenderly
“You deserve the very best in this world.”
His eyes returned to me, full of disappointment.
“Sophia, I really misjudged you. Chloe has worked diligently since she joined the company. And you? You can’t stand to see her succeed. Over something so small, you’ve slandered her again and again!”
“I order you to apologize to her. Now.”
I laughed coldly.
“And who are you to order me?T
Without another glance, I hailed a cab, clutching my mother’s photo as I climbed in.
Adrian shouted after me, his voice furious.
“Running away after causing trouble–is this how you were raised, Sophia?”
I lowered the window and cast one last look at them–at their entwined figures, and finally at Adrian, the man I’d loved for nearly ten years.
Word by word, I said

She winced, tears spilling down her cheeks.

I closed the window and told the driver to go.
The exhaust fumes were the only thing left behind for them.
