The sacred ceremony bells began to ring. It was almost my time to enter.
Ethan was stunned.
“Where are you? Why don’t I see you?”
I held the phone up. “Listen.”
The sound of ceremony bells drifted through the phone, mixed with the sound of the wind.
Ethan tensed, his voice trembling.
“You–you’re at Aurora Peak in Alaska?”

“Are you crazy? I already changed the location!”
I laughed softly.
“I know.”
Ethan was speechless.
“What do you mean, you know? You knew, and you went anyway? What is wrong with you? Why are you so stubborn? This is the most important day of our lives, and you didn’t even tell me!”
“Did you tell me before you changed the location?”
My question silenced him.
“A beach is so much more romantic! I was trying to give you a surprise! Why can’t you understand my good intentions?”
I smiled. Someone was waiting for me in the distance.
“I can’t understand them. And I don’t need to anymore.”
“I’m about to accept a mark. Goodbye.”
I hung up and gave the phone to my friend to hold.
Ethan called again and again, but he would never get through.
A suffocating pain gripped his chest. His inner wolf was howling in rage.
She’s accepting a mark? Whose mark is she accepting?
It finally dawned on him. This time, I was truly done.
His parents walked over, looking at him with confusion.
“What’s going on? Where’s Sarah? Didn’t you go to pick her up?”
Tears welled in Ethan’s eyes. He didn’t know how to explain.
Leo, standing beside him, finally got it.
“I told you not to take it too far, but you wouldn’t listen…”

“A bonding ceremony is a huge deal. You changed the location without telling her. You can’t blame her for not showing up now.”
“I think I saw Sarah at a dress shop with another guy a while back. I thought I was mistaken. Turns out… she went for an immediate bonding with someone else.”
Ethan’s parents understood now. They grabbed Ethan angrily.
“You fool! Go get your mate back right now!”
Ethan, his eyes red, grabbed Kira’s hand.
“Kira, come with me to Alaska! Now!”
Kira pulled her hand back, looking wronged.
“But my foot still hurts… And what’s the point? She’s already…”
Ethan shouted frantically, “She is my mate! I won’t let her marry someone else!”
“You have to be there and explain to her that there’s nothing between us!”
