For the past few days, I had done everything in my power to avoid Eloise.
At this point, the last thing that I wanted was to see her. The last thing that I wanted was to endure being confronted by something that
I did not want to speak about.
It wasn’t difficult. She stayed in her room with Isla, only leaving to visit the incubation rou And me? I made sure that the only time!
saw my daughter was when she was with the nurses.
They would take her a few times to check on her and when that happened I would come and see her. I would make sure that she’s OK before I left her to go back to her mother.
It was easier that
way.
Easier than dealing with the weight of her words.
What happened to us, Dominic?
That damn question had been circling my mind like a vulture waiting to pick at the remains of something long dead.
And I did not like the effect that it was having on me. Her words had more effect on me than a man hitting me in the face. And that was not something that I liked. It was not something that I wanted to think about. Nor was it something that I wanted to cope with.
I hated that she made me think about it. That she made me remember.
Because now, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t help but find myself thinking about whatever she had said.
I had spent years burying whatever past I had with her. I had convinced myself that it didn’t matter, that she didn’t matter. She was nothing more than a fleeting mistake, a consequence I never should have allowed to happen.
I had tried to convince myself that the two of us grew up together and that was why we were close to one another. That was why when I was growing, she was always around me.
And yet, all it took was one damn question to unravel the carefully built walls I had surrounded myself with. All it took was her looking at me the way they cheated, looking as vulnerable as she did, for me to find myself weakening towards her.
I sat in my office, my fingers tapping against the desk, eyes scanning over documents that I had no interest in reading. The pack’s finances were stable, the border patrol reports were filed, and yet, none of it felt relevant. Not when my thoughts kept circling back to her.
I exhaled sharply, rubbing a hand over my jaw. I had more important things to focus on.
A sharp knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts. It was my father. I did not need him to actually knock on the door. He normally barged inside for him to do so. Told me that something was going on.

“Come in,” I said, straightening in my chair.
He walked inside, his expression grim, and I could tell that something was going on. He was trying to find the right way to tell me what
it was.
I knew that look. It wasn’t one I particularly enjoyed seeing.
“Father,” I acknowledged, watching as he closed the door behind him. “What is it?”
“(
Thome crossed his arms over his chest, his green eyes sharp with something between irritation and warning. Giovanni is on his way.
And trust me when I say that it is not going to be a good thing for him to come here.” I stiffened slightly, my fingers curling against the
desk. “He’s coming here?”
“He’s pissed,” my father continued, his tone flat. “Considering the fact that you let Lucy stay after she originally wanted to leave, he believes you’re playing some sort of game with his daughter. Needless to say, you bringing her here was a mistake, but I’m not going
to ask about that, nor am I going to argue about it.
I scoffed, leaning back in my chair. “She chose to stay, not me. I brought her here because we needed to talk, but her staying was her
choice.”
“Then tell her to leave before this turns into something you don’t want to deal with,” he said, his voice laced with imitation.
“I already told her to leave. She is the one who is locking herself in her room, refusing to leave. He can deal with his own daughter. I believe that this is something that can be done as family members.” I muttered, tapping my desk twice.
“Then prepare yourself for whatever Giovanni throws at you, because he isn’t coming for a casual conversation, Dominic. He’s coming with a waming, and if you aren’t careful, it’ll turn into something worse.” He said, giving me his warning, letting me know that this was
not something that he liked.
I clenched my jaw, but nodded. I wasn’t afraid of Giovanni Lockhart, but I wasn’t an idiot either. The man wasn’t someone to be taken lightly. He was ruthless, calculated, and the fact that he had even allowed Lucy to remain here as long as she had was a miracle in itself.
But now, he was coming.
And I had a feeling things were about to get messy.
The sound of tires crunching against the gravel outside the packhouse pulled me from my thoughts. I stood at the entrance, watching as the sleek black car rolled to a slow stop before the doors opened.
Giovanni stepped out, his towering frame and presence demanding attention even without a single word. His dark suit was pressed to perfection, his every movement controlled, deliberate.
He didn’t rush. He never did.

His eyes landed on me as he adjusted the cuffs of his suit, and I didn’t move as he approached.
When he finally stopped in front of me, he didn’t waste time.

“Stay the fuck away from my daughter,” he said, his voice low, controlled, but laced with quiet fury. “If you have any value for your life,
Dominic, you will not drag her into whatever mess you have created.”
I tilted my head, my lips curling into a smirk. “You think I forced her to stay? She is the one refusing to leave, and trust me, I did tell her
that she can.”
His jaw ticked. “I think you made her believe she needs to. And I’m telling you now, if you keep her tangled in this, you won’t like what
happens next.”
My wolf bristled at the challenge, but I didn’t react. I was not going to allow myself to react to something like this because I knew for a
fact that if I did, it was going to go dirtier than I wanted it to be.
Instead, I met his glare head–on.
“I have no intention of playing games with Lucy,” I said smoothly. “If she stays, it’s her choice. I’m not forcing her to trust me when I say
I told her to leave and she said that she wanted to. It is her who keeps changing her mind. You can speak to her if you want.”
Giovanni’s expression darkened, his fists clenching. “Then let me make this simple. I don’t give a fuck what choice she makes. If you drag my daughter any further into this, if she suffers because of you, I will make you regret it.”
The air between us crackled with tension, but I didn’t flinch.
I simply smirked.
“Noted.”
Giovanni’s dark eyes burned into mine, his patience wearing thin.
“You’ve been warned, Dominic,” he said, his voice sharper now. “I don’t give second chances.”
With that, he turned, his movements as precise as ever as he walked back to his car.
I stood there, watching as the vehicle disappeared down the road, my smirk fading.
This wasn’t over.
Not by a long shot.
