Chapter 18
Charlotte refused to give up.
She didn’t want to spend her life like a prisoner trapped in this place.
Using the internet’s influence, she portrayed herself as a victim.
Eyes swollen from crying, she looked at herself in the livestream.
“You all have no idea–Natalie’s father was a perverted beast! I was blackmailed and tricked into going there!”
“I never intended to hurt anyone. He lunged at me, warning me to stay away from Christian! Said I shouldn’t block his daughter’s path to wealth. He grabbed my throat, trying to strangle me. I didn’t mean to knock over the oil barrel–he lit the fire!”
“He wanted to burn me alive, but he died instead. Yet I have to bear the blame for murder!” She wept pitifully.
Comments below shifted from initial doubt to gradually believing her.
After all, Natalie’s father wasn’t exactly a good person.
“Ms. Reed, don’t cry! We support you! That kind of scum deserved to die!”
“Exactly! Protecting yourself is self–defense! Charlotte did nothing wrong!”
“I suspected that video was fake from the start. Obviously Natalie was behind it all. She’s jealous of Charlotte and wanted to ruin her reputation! That woman is as evil as her bastard father!”
“But… killing is still wrong…”
“You don’t understand! Beyond law lies human emotion! Charlotte did nothing wrong!”
Small, weak voices were buried by self–righteous crusaders.
Ruby cursed angrily in her room.
“That woman is such a bitch! Can’t even be killed–truly a disaster that lasts a thousand years!”
Natalie lowered her eyes, watching Charlotte whitewash herself in the livestream, silently clenching her fists.
Three years of wrongful imprisonment–she hated Charlotte, but hated Christian even more.
But for now, she could only wait.
She closed her phone screen and casually patted Ruby’s shoulder.
“I’m going out for a bit. I’ll be back later.”
Charlotte reaped the benefits of internet fame.
Watching her follower count rise, she was ecstatic.
Looking at those fools rushing to her private messages to comfort and encourage her, she wanted to laugh at those messages.
But she didn’t know real danger was gradually approaching.
Christian closed his phone with a terrifyingly dark expression.

He’d watched the entire livestream.
He never imagined Charlotte would dare throw such dirt on Natalie.
He’d truly underestimated her before!
Did she think hiding in a psychiatric hospital would save her?
Christian made a phone call, saying a few words.
Soon he received a reply.
With a cold expression, he entered Charlotte’s psychiatric hospital.
The hospital food wasn’t good.
She angrily threw her bowl and forks.
Looking at the spilled food on the floor, she immediately flew into a rage.
She pulled out her phone to call her assistant.
“I said to order from a five–star hotel restaurant. Why are you so inefficient! I know–you must think I’m down and out now, so you want to step on me too?!”
The assistant held the phone away from her ear, frowning in disgust.
“Ms. Reed, how could that be? You only told me last night, but the restaurant you specified requires advance reservations. I’ve already pulled strings. to expedite it, but you’ll have to bear with it one more day. Tomorrow-”
“I don’t want to hear excuses! I’m telling you, anyone can step on me, but not you!”
She pressed speakerphone contemptuously.
“Have you forgotten who saved you when you were caught helping a client commit perjury? Me! Without me, with your mediocre skills, could you have gotten into the best law firm in Boston?”
“Once you’re my dog, you’re my dog for life! When I say go east, you don’t dare go west. What right do you have to refuse me?”
Heavy, suppressed breathing came from the other end.
Just as Charlotte was about to speak again, a cold laugh came through: “Charlotte, in your eyes, besides Christian, must everyone else be dogs who obey you?”
“What a pity–Christian doesn’t even want to look at you now!”
Charlotte’s expression cracked instantly.
She glared at the phone screen through gritted teeth: “What–did–you–say!”
“I said Christian finds you disgusting and looks down on you. Actually, not just Mr. Vale–who in the firm respects you?”
“You only got by riding on Christian’s coattails. Your abilities? Oh wait, do you have any abilities?”
“All you had was having me arrange for people in prison to ‘teach‘ your rival a lesson. What if Christian knew his wife’s three years in prison weren’t easy? What if he knew you had people beat up Natalie behind the scenes, forcing her to swallow food with glass shards, dislocating her arms…”
“Charlotte, would you still be alive?”

The phone was slammed down.
But Charlotte couldn’t be bothered cursing the caller.
She trembled, legs weak, staring at the man who suddenly appeared before her.
