Chapter 6
Christian frowned deeply but didn’t hesitate further.
He swept the woman before him into his arms and evacuated toward safety.
Natalie watched his retreating figure disappear before her eyes.
She could have called out to Christian, told him “I’m here.”
But she remained silent.
Charlotte wanted her to see clearly who Christian would choose between them.
She found Charlotte’s test laughable.
Christian had already made this choice three years ago.
What was there left to test?
Her body was shoved hard by the crowd behind her, throwing her violently to the ground.
People focused only on escape didn’t care what was under their feet–person or object–as they stepped on her shoulder.
Ma
Natalie screamed in pain. Then came trampling on her head, feet, fingers–she couldn’t tell which was which.
The thin air made her face flush red, unable to catch her breath.
Churning stomach pain numbed her nerves.
Until everything went black and she lost consciousness completely.
When she woke again, she was back in the hospital.
Christian held a cigarette, blowing smoke toward the window.
Natalie began coughing violently from the smoke.
He quickly stubbed out the cigarette.

As if afraid she’d demand answers, Christian suddenly spoke first: “Natalie, I was going to come back for you, but Charlotte suddenly had a headache. She’s in poor health–I was afraid something would happen, so I planned to get her out first then return for you, but-”
“I understand.” She barely moved her lips.
How could she not understand?
The person who really needed his explanation was Charlotte–explaining that he already cared about her enough.
She didn’t need him proving it to her over and over.
Seeing her response, Christian’s carefully prepared excuses stuck in his throat.
“You understand?”
“Yes, I understand.”

She seemed so certain.
Christian’s expression darkened abruptly.
An inexplicable anger lodged in his chest, unable to rise or fall.
“I want to see Grandmother.”
Christian finally heard her make a request.
But he hadn’t expected such a simple thing,
After thinking, he said: “Natalie, Grandmother had some heart discomfort recently, but don’t worry–I’ve had people take her for tests. Once you recover, I’ll arrange for you to meet.”
Her ribs were injured–even breathing brought sharp pain.
Hearing about Grandmother’s illness, Natalie’s heart clenched.
“Don’t worry, it’s minor. I specifically consulted cardiology specialists.”
“When you can stand up, I’ll take you to see her.”
As if to compensate, Christian stayed by Natalie’s side constantly.
But the next evening, his phone rang.
“Christian, I do love you, and we loved each other first. Is Natalie trying to drive me to death!”
Charlotte’s tearful voice came through the receiver.
The call suddenly disconnected. Without hesitation, Christian grabbed his coat and headed for the door.
Natalie didn’t know what happened, but instinct told her it wasn’t good.
She picked up her phone and called Ruby again.
“Ruby, can you help me with one more thing?”
“Help me find out which hospital my grandmother is actually in…”
When Christian returned, it was past midnight.
Thunder and rain raged outside. He was soaked through, dripping water onto Natalie’s hospital bed.
But looking closer–that wasn’t rainwater, it was blood!
Natalie’s eyes snapped open to see his face dark with fury.
“Natalie, why did you do this?” Christian’s features were shadowed with gloom.
She frowned in confusion. “What are you talking about? Why what?”
Christian quickly pulled out his phone and slammed it onto her hand.
She winced in pain, looking at the photos on the screen.
Those images were from years ago–Charlotte being assaulted while unconscious and drunk at a hotel.

“Beautiful Female Lawyer Brutally Assaulted While Drunk!” blazed in red, bold headlines.
Someone had also exposed her as a homewrecker, calling her shameless.
Various vile words filled the comment section.
“I questioned the reporter who broke this story. He clearly stated a woman surnamed Warner contacted him, asking for no payment, just wanting to destroy Charlotte!”
“The evidence is solid! Natalie, what do you have to explain!”
She looked up to meet his bloodshot eyes.
“It wasn’t me. I didn’t do it.”
Slap!
A sharp slap rang out in the room.
“Natalie, how did you become so vicious!”
“Charlotte slit her wrists because of you. Natalie, this won’t end here.”
Christian turned and left without looking back.
She slowly moved her numb, stiff body, watching his long–gone figure.
In her mind were the vows they’d spoken at their wedding.
Loyalty, trust, cherish…
“Ha, Christian, which of those did you actually keep?”
