Chapter 5
Christian’s unfinished words caught in his throat.
The complexity in his eyes flickered momentarily.
“She’ll pay triple the hospital costs this time. Nutrition and care fees will also be transferred to your account. I’ve warned her family too–she’ll reflect for a week.”
“Ha.” Natalie’s lips curved as she smiled at him.
Christian clenched his jaw and looked away.
“She’s Charlotte’s closest friend, after all. Too harsh a punishment would upset Charlotte.”
Charlotte! Charlotte! All Christian talked about was Charlotte Reed!
Natalie laughed until her body shook. She wanted to scream hysterically.
But her voice was damaged–she couldn’t make a sound.
Her desperate fingers dug into her flesh.
Christian wanted to defend himself but didn’t know where to begin.
After a long pause, as if remembering something, he quickly said: “Natalie, trust me. Just two more wishes left. Once I complete them, we can-
“Christian, I’m tired. I want to rest.” She interrupted him.
Her emotionless eyes seemed to harbor something growing and clamoring beneath.
Until the door gently closed.
Natalie shut her eyes tightly.
In her pursuit of Christian, she’d overcome every obstacle.
She’d once thought that marrying him would make her the happiest woman in the world.
But reality told her otherwise.
Things that didn’t belong to her should never be touched.
On discharge day, Christian brought her home.
Stepping inside after three years felt like another lifetime.
Natalie saw the vegetables and fruits she’d once planted had been replaced with bright red roses.
At the entrance, she couldn’t find her old slippers.
Instead, there was a pair of new pink rose–patterned slippers.
Christian’s expression stiffened. He kicked them aside and found guest slippers from the shoe cabinet.
Looking at her awkwardly, he said, “I replaced your old slippers because they were worn out. I haven’t had time to buy new ones yet.”

Natalie looked down without answering.
Old shoes, like old people–Christian wanted to replace more than just slippers.
Several women’s clothing items lay scattered on the living room sofa.
He explained again, “Charlotte had an episode two days ago. It was sudden–her friends brought her here. But don’t worry, she stayed in the guest room!”
As if afraid she’d misunderstand, Christian specifically showed her Charlotte’s guest room.
Natalie’s indifference made him panic.
He hugged her tightly, trying to dispel his unease.
“Natalie, I missed you so much. When you refused to see me in prison, I had insomnia every night, dreaming you blamed me. I-”
“I don’t want to discuss the past.”
Natalie firmly pulled away from his embrace, interrupting him.
Christian’s fingers trembled slightly as he instinctively gripped her hand tighter. “Alright, it’s all behind us…”
Natalie let out a cold laugh. Just as she was about to ask about her grandmother, the door suddenly rang.
Charlotte entered familiarly, setting down her things. Seeing Christian holding Natalie, unconcealed jealous hatred flashed in her eyes.
“Christian, let’s go to the mall together to buy Natalie some clothes,” she said with fake warmth, linking arms with Natalie.
Only then did Christian seem to remember something as he looked at Natalie.
“Your old clothes had been stored too long. Charlotte thought you wouldn’t be able to wear them when you returned, so she threw them out.”
Threw them out?
Natalie coldly shook off Charlotte’s arm.
Charlotte seemed to want to watch her lose control, but Natalie simply replied coolly: “Fine.”
Before leaving, Natalie excused herself to use the bathroom.
She quietly slipped into Christian’s study and Charlotte’s bedroom.
She carefully hid pinhole cameras.
At the mall, Charlotte sent Christian away on an excuse, then cornered Natalie.
She looked at Natalie with pure malice.
“Natalie Warner, you’re surprisingly hard to kill! But that’s fine–I’ll make you see clearly who Christian would choose between us!”
As soon as she finished speaking, Charlotte triggered the smoke alarm.
The mall immediately erupted in chaos.
Screams and fleeing sounds scattered the two women as crowds surged.
Christian saw Charlotte being pushed aside and rushed toward her without thinking.

But just as he was about to look for Natalie, Charlotte grabbed his arm tightly.
Tears streaming down her face, she looked at Christian with panicked eyes. “Christian, I’m so scared!”
