Jake knew there was no point arguing anymore, so he left.
As soon as he was gone, Dominic rushed back to Lily’s room to calm her down.
He was all sweet and gentle with her, worried she might be scared.
He had no clue that with this woman’s tricks, fear was the last thing on her mind.
Me and Dominic’s sister Sophie used to be best friends.
A few years back, we went shopping at the mall together.
She went into this fancy boutique’s dressing room and I waited outside.
After ten minutes, she still hadn’t come out, so I went to check on her.
What I saw scared the hell out of me.
Sophie was gone!
I called Dominic right away. Soon after, he got the ransom call.
Sophie got kidnapped right under my nose!
Later, Dominic paid this huge ransom, but the kidnappers killed Sophie anyway.
The day Dominic went to get her back, all he brought home was Sophie’s cold, dead body.
The kidnappers had slashed her throat. Dominic stitched up that wound himself.
When parts of Sophie’s body started rotting, Dominic cut away the dead flesh with his own hands.
After that, he swore he’d never touch a scalpel again.
When he carried Sophie out of that operating room, I tried to help.
But Dominic kicked me to the ground.
“You fucking jinx! You got my sister killed!”
Lying there on the floor, it felt like he’d kicked my insides apart.
I was crying, saying, “No… I’m sorry… I didn’t mean for this to happen…”
Dominic was still pissed. He kicked me a few more times.
“You think saying “I didn’t mean it‘ will bring my sister back?!”
“You’re the one who should’ve died! Why the hell was it my sister and not you?”
I was sprawled on the floor, hurting so bad I couldn’t even speak.
Yeah. If only I’d been the one to die.
Then I wouldn’t have to carry this guilt.

Chapter 5
Sophie’s death became this huge wall between me and Dominic that we could never get past.
He wouldn’t even let me go to Sophie’s funeral.
I couldn’t look the Harrington family in the eye anymore. They all thought I was the one who got Sophie killed.
That’s when Lily showed up.
She was just one of Dominic’s secretaries back then. She handled Sophie’s funeral arrangements, and did a damn good job at it.
Step by step, she worked her way closer to Dominic, until she became the woman standing by his side.
I couldn’t handle it. I went crazy, screaming, even got down on my knees and begged him.
I begged him not to trash what we had together, to remember all those promises we made when we were kids about being together forever.
But no matter what I did, Dominic wouldn’t even look at me.
Over and over, he’d send Lily to deal with me.
She’d twist her wrist around, showing off the jewelry and watches Dominic bought her, talking down to me like I was nothing.
“Miss. Shirley, I’d save your energy if I were you. You could scream until the world ends and he still wouldn’t look at you.”
“He’s got me now. Don’t worry, I’ll take real good care of him.”
I was grinding my teeth, wanting to slap that smug look right off her face.
Right then, Dominic showed up. He grabbed my wrist and pulled Lily behind him.
He yelled at me, “Touch her and see what happens!”
Lily hid behind him, putting on this pitiful act. “Dominic, she wants to kill me!”
Dominic bought every word. He smiled coldly. “You think you’re good enough to lay a hand on my woman?”
His woman…
If Lily was his woman, then what the hell was I?
When I left the Harrington house feeling like a ghost, I looked back and saw Lily watching me.
She had this proud, satisfied smile, watching me slink away like a beaten dog.
Sophie’s death was sketchy as hell. Dominic had been investigating for years, but always hit dead ends right when he was getting close.
Like someone was blocking him from finding the truth.
Once I split from the Harringtons‘ place, I figured I’d look into it myself.
And look how that turned out – I got kidnapped just like Sophie.
Lily’s surgery was in progress when one of Dominic’s guys suddenly appeared in front of him.
The guy whispered something in Dominic’s ear, and Dominic shot up from his chair.
“What did you just say? That’s impossible! How could it be her?!”
