Dominic completely lost it–this guy who never showed emotion suddenly looked like a rabid animal.
“You know what Nora pulled two days ago?”
“She staged another fake kidnapping, asking me for fifty grand.”
“She knows kidnapping is the one thing that totally fucks me up, and she’s just twisting the knife!”
“I’ll never forgive her. Never!”
Hearing all this, I started crying.
I knew how much the word “kidnapping” messed him up.
But Dominic, I didn’t do it to hurt you.
They really did kidnap me.
I kept dreaming that someone would bust into that dark warehouse and save what was left of me.
I should’ve known better. That was just wishful thinking.
The night before surgery, Lily threw a fit, demanding to see Dominic.
Dominic ran into her room and kicked everyone else out.
He crouched down next to her bed so they were eye to eye.
Lily pouted, saying she was scared.
God, I was so jealous that she could just tell him she was afraid like that.
Acting all cute, asking him to comfort her.
Not like me–even after getting murdered, I never heard one comforting word from him.
Dominic held her hand, kissing her knuckles over and over.
“Don’t be scared. I’m here. You don’t have to be afraid of anything.”
“I got you the best doctors, the best equipment. Hell, I even cut out that kidney myself.”
Lily got all emotional hearing that. She goes, “You swore you’d never touch a scalpel again, but you did it for me…”
Dominic shook his head. “For you? I’d break every promise I ever made.”
He pulled this charm out of his pocket and carefully placed it in Lily’s palm.
“My mom got down on her knees ten thousand times to pray for this. I’m giving it to you now, you’re gonna be fine.”
I saw that familiar charm and went totally insane trying to grab it, but my hands just went right through them.
That was for both of us! Aunt Martha got us a matching pair!

Lily’s eyes went wide. “This charm… I think I saw one just like it at Nora’s place…”
Hearing my name, Dominic’s face went dark.
“I already told her to give it back. She wouldn’t. If my mom hadn’t insisted on giving her one back then, she never would’ve deserved to touch it.”
“The one she has? I’m pretending some thief took it. You keep mine safe.”
Floating up there, I couldn’t help but laugh.
So that’s all I was to him. Just a thief.
Not even as good as a real thief.
But when his mom gave us those matching charms, he’d told me to pick first.
Lily knew how important this was. She put on this fake modest act. “Your mother left this for you. Something this precious…. I can’t take it…”
Seeing her play the innocent little angel made me want to rip her throat out.
“If you won’t take it, then I’ll put it on you myself.”
Dominic never took no for an answer. He hung the charm around her neck.
Lily couldn’t hide her smug smile.
Then she suddenly frowned. “Oh, I heard your phone call the other day. Did something happen to your fiancée?”
